Pair Skating
Pairs Skating is distinguished from ice dancing and single skating by elements unique to pair skating, including overhead lifts, twist lifts, death spirals, and throw jumps. The teams also perform the elements of single skating in unison.
Pair skating requires similar technique and timing on all elements of the performance, as well as practice and trust between the partners. The aim is to create an impression of "two skating as one".

Ice Dance
Ice Dance is a form of ballroom dancing on the ice where a man and woman skate together and perform a variety of turns, steps, twizzles, spins and lifts. Unlike Pairs Skating, overhead lifts are not permitted.
Another distinctive aspect of ice dance is the particular use of music in the performances.
In ice dancing, dancers must skate to music with a definite beat or rhythm, which brings out the character and flavour of that particular dance.

Artistic
Artistic events are held in every state and organised by every club. Artistic programs do have some technical requirements however they are judged on components only - Skating Skills, Performance and Execution, Choreography and Interpretation.
The marriage of the costume with the music and how the skater expresses and interprets are also major aspects of a fabulous artistic program.

Synchronized skating
Synchro" is a large and fast-growing discipline of figure skating where 8–20 skaters skate on ice as a team, moving as one flowing unit at high speeds while completing difficult footwork and precision moves.
The discipline was originally called 'precision skating' in North America because of the emphasis on maintaining precise formations and timing of the group.
Synchronized Skating uses the same judging system as singles, pairs, and ice dancing skating and is judged primarily on teamwork, precision, speed, difficulty, and performance.

Adult skating
'Adult' skating these days includes not only those skaters who have grown with the sport from their early years, but also people who have taken up the sport as adults.
A major International Adult Figure Skating Competition takes place every year in Oberstdorf and is for adult skaters who have reached at least the age of twenty eight (28) and Synchronized skaters at least the age of twenty five (25). This competition attracts around 600 skaters each year from all around the world.
The Aussie Skate program also incorporates a learn-to-skate stream for adults!
Adults take part in all disciplines including Synchronized skating, Singles, Pairs and Dance, and Theatre On Ice.
There are some adult specific competitions in Australia, notably OFSC Masters, and ANZAS (bi-annual).
